The Dance of Death
| This short "silent" film was shot for the cost of two hi-8 video tapes. On a road trip, Dame Darcy, Banjo Pete, Eric and I visited my mother. We raided her attic and started dressing up in some of the costumes, as usual. But this time we invaded a local park and brought the video camera, shooting in sepiatone again. The story was whipped up in a few minutes, and it was developed further through improvisation. As each of us thought of a new idea, we shot it. Props were created from found garbage, and everyone did their own make-up, hair, wardrobe, etc. The looks on the local residents faces were priceless, as they glanced out of their car windows and got a glimpse of the horror show unfolding in their lovely park. After the footage was shot, it was brought in to a friend's Avid editing suite. The video was sped up, and film effects were added, like flicker, grain and scratches. The editor, Karen Kelly, helped us form the 2 hours of raw footage into an entertaining 3 minute short. The soundtrack was borrowed from the editing suite's music collection, of course, we forgot to write down the music credits, and the cds disappeared back into the vault forever. The film ended up doing the underground film festival circuit for about a year or two, and will be available on the next VHS compilation: "A Night of Marchenfilme II" which is in the planning stages right now. |
